“walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to Him, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in knowledge of God.” ~ Colossians 1:10
This verse is basically what 1-on-1 Dicipleship is all about. Partnering in this program will enhance your walk with Jesus, learning how to live an effective and pleasing Christian life. The emphasis is on application, but there is plenty of learning that takes place at the same time.
This program includes ten weeks and there is no doubt that it is intensive. It will take some time and some hard work, but it is definitely worth it. You will be provided “work” to help you study and complete each week. Then reviewing the catalog to discuss and develop the concepts studied.
A Few Pointers
1. Pray — In anticipation of our time together, I will be in prayer for you and I would only ask that you also be in prayer for yourself. That God would open your heart to hear what He wants you to hear. I will also be in prayer that God will provide us a meaningful time of communication and learning together.
2. Use a “good” Bible — what does that even mean…. well, if you do not have a readable and reliable translation of the Bible that YOU understand, get one! An understandable translation will help you not only answer the questions from week to week but mostly — understand what the Lord is trying to say through His Word, to you.
3. Be Practical — During our time together, remember the goal is not simply to educate, but also to change our lives. We must be honest about where we are spiritually and the struggles we face. The Christian life is not easy, He never said it would be, and this program is not easy either. It’s not designed to be. The idea is to make sure our discussion touches the real you.
I know that part of my personal spiritual gift is teaching and mentoring others. So there is not any “asking for a friend” allowed text. In discipleship, growth begins where honesty starts. Sometimes “asking for a friend” is really our way of protecting ourselves from vulnerability. But true mentoring goes beyond surface-level conversations. If we never get honest about the real struggle, we can never get to the real root. Freedom begins when we stop hiding behind the question and allow someone to walk with us through the truth.
